Can you identify the alumnus shown here? Vacation photos from six members of the recently graduated FT07 class have been posted to the respective class page in the alumni website. The new additions are the first of a series of upgrades to the site that the Alumni Board will be undertaking in the next month.
If you have memorable photos from a recent vacation that your classmates would enjoy, please get in touch with the Alumni Board or post a comment here. And yes, that is a pet monkey.
On Wednesday Rady announced that Tanya and Charles Brandes have donated $5 million to the school, with a portion of the money designated for an endowment fund to provide student fellowships.
Tanya Brandes is a doctor who is involved in charitable medical services in New Guinea, Africa and other developing nations. Charles Brandes founded San Diego-based Brandes Investment Partners in 1974. The firm has $125 billion under management with 506 employees worldwide. The long-term perspective that Brandes has outlined is his firm’s 100 Year Vision is a fitting and inspiring match for Rady.
The Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC Chapel Hill has named the new 5th floor of its building after Dean Sullivan. Home to Kenan’s PhD students and IT staff, the floor will be called the Robert S. Sullivan, PhD Suite in honor of his “commitment to scholarship and service to the school.” The idea originated with donors Betty Kenan and Jim Inscoes, who also supported construction of the space.
Don’t forget that the Rady Summer BBQ is this SUNDAY from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay. It’s an open event, so bring your significant others, kids and pets for a great time by the water.
Rady Marketing and Communication has launched new faculty web pages to improve information access and electronic linkages to our faculty. From the faculty directory, visitors can also read about new incoming professors, although the information is a bit sparse as of now and lacking photographs.
Thanks to Scott Parish for giving Rady a consistently fresh presence online.
In preparation for events in the Bay Area and elsewhere across the west, Dean Sullivan has asked that alumni ensure their profiles on the alumni website are up to date.
Rady will contact you using this information when an event is to be held in your area.
The road trip is part of the UCSD Near You program, an initiative launched by the UCSD Alumni Association to drive enagements outside of San Diego. Rady is co-sponsoring the Bay Area trip to connect with our growing alumni and prospective student base. Both events are free and begin at 6:30 pm.
Mark your calendars for Friday, August 24th, when the Rady Alumni Association will take to the track at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Our next event will be at Del Mar’s 4 O’Clock Fridays series with a live concert performance by Pete Yorn.
First post is at 3:30 pm. The event will be held in a reserved section of the Clubhouse with all tickets sold in advance for $20. Watch your email or this blog for more info.

Daniel Parret ‘06 currently works in Decision Support at Biogen Idec in San Diego. He is also a member of the pioneering Flex class of 2006 and a feared veteran of Rady intermural soccer. The Wire caught up with Daniel for our most recent spotlight.
Wire: How has Rady impacted your job function and success? Perret: The Rady School helped me make the transition from lab to commercial. When I started the FlexMBA program in 2004, I was working in the Protein Chemistry department at Biogen Idec. Eventually, I had the opportunity to work a few hours per week in the marketing group at Biogen Idec and earn credits through the Tech Workshop class; this 6-month mission allowed me to gain exposure to the company’s commercial strategy and make connections that greatly facilitated my transition into the commercial side of drug development. Upon graduation, I joined the Decision Support group to support the market research activities for new products currently in development within the Oncology franchise.
W: What class (or classes) do you retrospectively view as most valuable? DP: One of the most valuable classes was definitely the Biotech Strategy class. Our professor, Jay Kranzler, brought in some great speakers and encouraged great class discussions around the future of the biotechnology industry. During that class, I also learned tremendously from my classmates who, for the majority, hold senior management positions in local biotech companies.
I also particularly enjoyed the negotiations class taught by David Schadke. Through the practice and analysis of real-life examples, we were able to acquire negotiation techniques that turned out quite useful at the time of my new contract negotiation!
W: Anything you’d like us to know about? DP: I remember my first day at Rady on September 10, 2004. I barely knew anyone in the classroom and got assigned to a specific group of students who would become my study partners for the first two quarters. Every week, we met a couple of times per week after work to go over all the assignments and readings; these meetings were also a chance to learn from each other since everyone in the team had a very distinct background. Without their help and support during the entire program, my Rady experience would not have been the same. Thank you Niall, Ebonye, Robert and Vaychan !!
Rady Marketing & Communication has updated the format of its quarterly newsletter to a web-based HTML layout. Conceived and created by Scott Parish, the new format is an exciting upgrade for news in the Rady community. It will also enable more detailed tracking of newsletter contents. This quarter, for example, the most popular story in the newsletter is about the Otterson Hall dedication.
Rady has announced that the second annual Caribbean BBQ will be held on July 29th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay. Break out something tropical for this summer tradition. Please RSVP by July 23rd at radyrsvp@ucsd.edu.
Rady has confirmed the hiring of seven new faculty members, all with excellent qualifications. Several are new professors who will be promising additions to the program and–we hope–promote innovation in the classroom:
Those of you at the recent full-time graduation will recall Nick Boyle’s brilliant commencement speech. Nick has recently shared a transcript of this speech with his classmates. The full contents can be reviewed at the preceding link.
Moreover, Nick’s letter to Governor Schwarzenegger and the Governor’s response are available for reading as well. Thanks, Nick, for documenting and sharing these memories. Graduation video is still in progress and should be posted here soon.
The Student Life Task Force convened by Dean Sullivan will hold its first meeting on July 14th at Otterson Hall. Assistant Dean JoAnne Starr will lead the group to fulfill its charge of “identifying and prioritizing key initiatives that will enhance student life this coming school year – and beyond.”
The participants include ten members of the full-time 2007 class, RSA head Jasmine Pritchard, MBA Programs staff members, and a special intern from the 2008 full-time program assigned to execution.
Rady graduated its first full-time class on Monday, June 18th in the courtyard of its new home, Otterson Hall. Michael Milken was the honorary guest speaker and Nick Boyle, who was elected by popular vote, spoke on behalf of the class. Video of both speeches will be available here shortly.
Awards for distinctive teaching were given to Professors Ross Valkanov and On Amir. Dean Bob Sullivan presided over the ceremony, which also featured remarks from Chancellor Mary Anne Fox. Roughly 450 people attended the inaugural event. Thank you to the FT07 class and in particular, Tony Cusano, for contributing the following photos. A special thank you is also due to Erwin Milan for making graduation such a classy event and tirelessly supporting this program.
The night before graduation, the Full-Time 2007 class celebrated its accomplishments at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. The party brought the class together for awards and unification before graduating on Monday, June 18th.
Nick Boyle, Forrest Wright, Elaine Kub, Becky Power, and Aron Tremble received special recognition at the event. The following photos were contributed by the class. Special thanks to Becky and MBA Programs for making this event possible.
